How to Manage Christmas in the Midst of Debt
It’s not easy to be all out on a Christmas if you have far too many debts to think about. Unusually large amounts of credit card debt and exorbitant personal loan rates are enough to consume all of your month’s salary and savings leaving you little or no budget for the holidays. But what fun would it be if you can’t celebrate the yuletide with zest and without financial worries? So here are some things you can do to assure you have a merry Christmas despite your worrisome debt.
Cheaper Christmas Dinner
You don’t have to prepare a fine dining-worthy meal to enjoy Christmas dinner. What matters are the people you’re with and chips and dips would be an absolute fun meal. But it’s not saying you should go for the chips. Case in point, you can prepare a cheaper menu so it doesn’t have to tax on your budget. Search the Internet for the best on-a-budget Christmas dinner recipes.
Do It Yourself (DIY) Gifts
You don’t have to spend a fortune on gifts if you use creativity and cheaper materials. For instance, you can make Christmas cards out of a picture from your camera and a few colorful drawings using art supplies you already have at home. You can also look in to wholesale prices so as to save further. You can give bathroom essentials, cosmetics, little tokens which can double as decors, or pairs of socks. Try baking as well and you can send cookies as gifts.
Potluck for Christmas Parties
If you can’t afford to be a host this year, skip it and delegate the task to someone else. But if it’s unavoidable that you do so yourself, announce a potluck instead. This way you don’t have to do all the spending plus you’ll only have to contribute a recipe or two to the table. Don’t buy anymore disposable utensils, too. Take on the task of arduous dish washing. This is cheaper not to mention healthier due to all the scrubbing and wiping you have to do.
Scrimp and Skip
You can also scrimp on the usual extravagant ideas that you usually do. For example you can go easy on your Christmas decors and put up only the essentials. You can also skip your trips this year and proceed if your budget allows you already. A few months of waiting wouldn’t hurt.
In the middle of a debt crisis, you must be practical and prioritize paying. Save money on Christmas and use it to pay for personal loans, auto loans, and whatnot. This way you get out of debt faster which is far more important than spending unnecessarily extravagant this Christmas.
